The IGBC (The Indian Green Building Council) said that 100 cities under the Centre’s ambitious Smart City Project will be developed as green cities. IGBC is a division of CII and is engaged in developing rating programs for new green building, It is also engaged in certification services and green building training.
The IGBC Chairman Prem C Jain informed that IGBC has been roped in by the PMO office as well as Ministry of Urban development for creating environment friendly and energy efficient smart cities.
He said that when the 100 smart cities project was announced, he approached the PM Narendra Modi and requested him to call it 100 green cities and suggested him to focus on simple techniques of energy saving, solid waste management, rain water harvesting and various others while creating smart cities across India. Jain was invited by the PMO and subsequently he presented the proposal to urban development ministry to implement green initiatives to which they agreed. He said that all the cities will now be developed as green cities and he is set to take these green initiatives further in the country.
IGBC is not only going to work with the administration of these cities but is also going to certify their work. Jain who was attending the 13th edition of Green Building Congress-105 in Gandhinagar, informed that they have taken up a project of certifying 400 railway stations which will be converted into Green Railway Station.
He said that so much green work can be done in railways like installation of solar panels on platform roofs, replacing normal lights with LED, rain water conservation and so many. He further added that within six months IGBC will roll out the pilot project for certification of these green stations. He also said that Gujarat based stations like Rajkot or Bahrauch can be selected for national pilot project.
