India is pulling all strings to get energy ministers from 107 countries together in a same platform to make the vision of PM Narendra Modi’s of “ sunshine countries” a reality ahead of the global climate meet in Paris. The conclave will formally launch the sunshine group, as InSPA( International Agency for solar policy and Application). Government is putting all efforts to hold the meeting in Mid November, prior to Paris talk on November 30.

The sunshine countries are all major developed and developing economies between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and also include Australia, New Zealand and China. India is also lobbying for InSPA headquarters in the country.

Renewable energy Secretary, Upendra Tripathi informed that this was PM’s idea to develop universal energy access through mutual cooperation. However he did not give any date of the meet.  Solar Power has always been an upmost agenda of the Modi Government and has set a target to install 100 GW by 2022 at an investment of Rs 6 Lakh crore. There is a huge jump from the 20,000 mw targeted by the UPA government in 2010 to 100 GW by Modi government.

India is putting more stress on solar energy. The  switch from mega watt to giga watt is clear indication to the developed economies that India will not buckle down to any pressure and will address the issue of climate in its own way.

The idea of a sunshine grouping was first floated by Modi in January at the first meeting of the reconstituted Council on Climate Change. In his address, PM Modi laid stress on a “paradigm shift” in global attitude towards climate change and called upon countries with solar potential to come together so that they can provide low-cost clean energy to their citizens and not to be arm-twisted by rich nations closely guarding their patented cutting-edge technology.

The countries which are coming in the group have a lot in common in term of solar sources. They are also facing the similar problems of lack of energy and accessibility, except in some countries. This grouping will give a platform to these countries to learn from mutual experiences and to get some common financial solutions.
