The Centre aims to complete 34 different projects of Indian Railways in the northeast region of the country. These projects are expected to be completed in the next five to six years, and will require additional cost of about Rs 35,000 crore. The Railway Ministry announced that no new project would be undertaken and the focus was to complete the 34 projects with a total cost of Rs 54,000 crore. As on 31 March 2014, about Rs 20,000 crore has already been spent. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the total laying of new tracks and gauge conversion is 4,517 km as on 1 April 2014, and only 1,889 km has been commissioned. The main target is to complete construction of 450 km this year, in comparison to 310 km in the last year.
