Delhi Metro's Solar Power PlantNew Delhi: Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu along with Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday inaugurated the first rooftop solar power plant at Dwarka Sector 21 station of Delhi Metro.

The 500 MWP solar power plant, meant to meet part power needs of Dwarka Sector-21 Metro Station, was switched on remotely using web link at Metro Bhawan.

The solar plant, which was developed jointly by Delhi Metro and German government-owned not-for-profit enterprise GIZ, will be utilized for meeting the station’s power requirement.

“This initiative of solar power generation to meet Delhi Metro’s part requirement of power is an all out effort to promote renewable energy resources,” states Naidu.

According to Naidu, despite having 365 days of sun, the country has not been able to use it in a proper manner. “There was an imperative need to promote renewable energy, increase power generation and become energy sufficient.”

Agrees Goyal, who said the government’s mission was to fast-track the development of renewable and show the world that India can become its “renewable capital”.

The Delhi Metro will be exploring the possibility of installing five such solar power generating rooftop plants in future at the Yamuna Bank Metro station, Yamuna Bank depot, Anand Vihar Metro station, Pragati Maidan Metro station and the Metro residential complex at Pushp Vihar.
