Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the biggest container handling port in India, is likely to launch its port-based special economic zone (SEZ) project by this month. The port-SEZ project will come up with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore and will be developed over an area of 277 ha. Currently, JNPT is hiring architectural, master planning and engineering design consultants for its multi-purpose SEZ. Land development will be undertaken in the next two months with the help of a consultant. 40 per cent of the proposed SEZ will be earmarked as Free Trade and Warehousing Zone and the remaining will be allocated for electrical, software and other industries. In its coveted role as the hub port on the western coast of India, JNPT is ranked 24th among the top 100 container ports in the world.
